The project sits at an elevation of 9000 feet in the mountains west of Golden, Colorado. Adjacent to the well-known mining structures abandoned 100 years ago, the home’s eccentric shed roofs have a familiar industrial formalness. With folding walls overlooking the east valley, the formal dissolves to a more jagged massing. The modest steel cladding reinforces the humble vernacular. At the approaching west side a white stained cedar clad wall softens the structure’s conversion to the adjacent aspen grove. Prepared for snowy winters and bright summers the year-round retreat will require minimal energy inputs using passive house design methodologies.
